Definitions:
Laya: Laya means Rhythm or Tempo. Laya can be categorized into 3 types:
1> Vilambit Laya : Slow rhythm
2> Madhya Laya: Medium rhythm
3> Drut Laya: Fast rhythm
Vilambit Laya: Slowest tempo or rhythm is called Vilambit Laya.
Madhya Laya: Medium tempo is called Madhya Laya
Drut Laya: Fast tempo is called Drut Laya
Matra: The smallest unit in a taal cycle is called Matra or beat. For Example: TeenTaal has 16 matras.
Sam: The 1st matra in a taal cycle which is also the returning point after completing a composition is called Sam. In Bhatkhande notations, Sam is denoted by a 'X'.
Taal: Taal are rhythmic cycles in music, such as TeenTaal of 16 matras, Jhaptaal of 10 Matras, Dadra of 6 matras etc.
Vibhaag: Matras in a taal are subdivided into smaller sets which are called Vibhag. For Example, there are 4 vibhags in Teentaal, each with 4 matras.
The 1st matra in each Vibhag is denoted by a Taali (clap) or Khali (swing). 1st matra of 1st vibhag is Sam.
In Bhatkhande notations, Vibhag is denoted by a '|'.
Taali: In a Taal cycle, when the 1st matra of a vibhag is denoted by a clap, its called Taali.
In Bhatkhande notations, Taali is denoted by numbers.
Khali: In a taal cycle, when the 1st matra of a vibhag is denoted by a swing , its called Khali.. For example, 9th matra in Teentaal is a Khali.
In Bhatkhande notations, Khali is denoted by a 'o'.
Tihai: Tihai is repeating a rhythmic piece identically three times with equal interval in between the repetitions. In the context of dance, when a rhythmic pattern beginning from any matra of the taal cycle, is repeated three times with equal intervals to reach the sam, it is called as Tihai.

Teentaal is a taal with 16 matra (beats), 4 vibhag (divisions), 3 taali (claps) and 1 khali (empty/swing)
Taali comes on beat number: 1, 5 and 13
Khali comes on beat number 9.

Dhah, Dugun, Chaugun:
These area compatible terms.
When in each matra (beat), 1 bols are recited, played or performed its called Dhah.
When in each matra (beat), 2 bols are recited, played or performed its called Dugun.
When in each matra (beat), 4 bols are recited, played or performed its called Chaugn.

1: Kathak is one of the 7 Classical dances of India. (7 classical dances of india are: Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Kuchipuri, MohiniAttam, Kathakali & Manipuri)
2: Kathak Nritya is from North India with 3 gharanas: Lucknow Gharana, Jaipur Gharana and Banaras Gharana, They are named after the cities wherein they evolved.
3:The main drum instruments played with Kathak are: Tabala & Pakhawaj
4:Lehra is also accompanied with drum instrument using instruments such as : Sitar, Harmonium, Sarangi, Sarod etc
5:Ghungharoos (anklets/bells ) are tied in each foot for rhythmic bell-sound with the footwork, which is speciality of Kathak.

Guru Jaya Sharma started learning Kathak from age 5 frist from her mother, then Prayag Sangeet Samiti, and then from Banaras Hindu University, under supervision of Guru Prof. Ranjana Srivastava.
Guru Jaya Sharma has learnt kathak from various Gurus from Lucknow Gharana as well as Banaras Gharana.
Her Gurus are: Late Guru Manu Lal Misra, Guru Prof. Ranjana Srivastava, Guru Maneesha Sathe and Guru Shambhavi Dandekar.
At our center, we learn to express through our dance.
